I am so proud to see that the human trafficking law I wrote and sponsored is working! “Activists have lauded the new laws as a major - and necessary - step forward in the state’s battle against trafficking.”

Decades ago, I was one of the few Deputy D.A.s who investigated and prosecuted people for crimes against the LGBTQ community. One of those cases will always stay with me. A gay man was walking down the street when several men jumped and brutally beat him because of his sexual orientation. I’m thankful to have been assigned that case, because I believe strongly that every person deserves justice and must be treated fairly by the criminal justice system.

During my time in the legislature, I was proud to support the civil unions law and a bill to allow transgender people to pursue a gender change in their birth certificates.

On Saturday, Out Front Colorado chose to honor me for my work on behalf of the LGBTQ community by presenting me with an Outfront Power award. This award means a great deal to me because of my commitment to civil rights and equal justice. I look forward to working with the LGBTQ community as we strive for a just and fair society for all of us.

Long time advocate for public safety and justice, McCann is ready to use her experience to keep Denver safe and to improve the criminal justice system

State Representative Beth McCann filed her candidate committee papers today to run for the office of Denver District Attorney in 2016.

Rep. McCann was re-elected in 2014 to represent House District 8 in the General Assembly by a margin of 85.7 percent. She has represented the district since 2009, prioritizing criminal justice and health care issues during her time in the legislature.

Rep. McCann previously served as a deputy and chief deputy District Attorney in the Denver D.A.’s office, trying hundreds of cases. She also served as Denver’s Manager of Safety during the Webb administration. Prior to running for state representative in 2008, she was the Deputy Attorney General in charge of the Civil Litigation and Employment law section of the Colorado Attorney General’s office, where she supervised 33 trial attorneys and 16 other employees. She was responsible for representing the state in state and federal court lawsuits concerning alleged constitutional violations, personal injury, property damage and employment issues.

“Throughout my career I have been passionate about improving our criminal justice system and strengthening public safety,” Rep. McCann said. “I will work hard to make the Denver D.A.’s office the premier law office in the state with well trained lawyers who can win cases and also exercise good judgment. I will emphasize juvenile justice reform, strengthen prevention efforts, and improve the treatment of those with mental illness in the criminal justice system. I am excited to start this campaign to continue my commitment to keeping Denver safe and secure.”

As a legislator, Rep. McCann has successfully passed major human trafficking legislation as well as bipartisan legislation to increase fairness in Colorado’s juvenile court proceedings. This year, she will sponsor a bill to keep low-level juvenile offenders out of the criminal system. She is also an active participant in the ongoing discussions concerning police and community relations and the use of excessive force by law enforcement.
